Puella Magi Madoka Magica

Genre: “Girls with magic powers”, Drama

Review:
Madoka Kaname is a fourteen-year-old girl who has a nightmare where she sees a girl fighting with a giant monster. Afterwards, a strange being with a feline appearance tries to make a deal with her, then she wakes up.
That same day, a new exchange student comes to her school: Homura Akemi. This new student insists that Kaname does not have to accept the contract that the feline creature (called Kyubey) offers her throughout the series.
The first chapters of the anime TV-series are unlikely to draw you into the action, and will probably leave you feeling indifferent to it, with no incentive to watch the remaining episodes. However, the four final chapters of the series are each more impressive than the others.

The soundtrack often comes at the beginning and the end. When you hear the tracks for the first time they almost go unnoticed, but after hearing them a few times, it is difficult to skip this part of the episode.

The world of the witches sometimes seems excessively psychedelic and extravagant because of the combination of real images, virtual images, and the manga drawings of the characters. A very common element of the manga series which works.

In conclusion, Puella Magi Madoka Magica is a very good anime TV series only if we can see it from beginning to end, because most of it could be summarized in a couple of episodes with the most interesting part at the end (the Japanese had to wait a month to see the last two episodes because of the earthquake last year). It starts out as the typical series of “girls with magic powers”, their dreams and their fussiness, until it transforms into “something more”. It is this transformation which makes us think and appreciate the characters that did not appear to be so charismatic at the beginning of the series. Using some flashbacks and flashforwards, like the series Damages, the action could have been distributed more evenly throughout the episodes, avoiding the hasty conclusions and speculations by viewers early in the series.
